Best Travel Route for Budget Backpackers: Hat Yai to Koh Lipe

Getting to Koh Lipe — What Salisa Guests Should Know

At Salisa Resort, we think the journey to Sunrise Beach is just as important as arriving. For guests coming from mainland Thailand, the Hat Yai to Koh Lipe route is the most popular budget option. It combines a shared minivan with a speedboat crossing, taking 4–6 hours and costing around THB 700–900 — solid value for backpackers who want to reach our island without overspending. The route is straightforward, even for first-timers.

The Hat Yai to Koh Lipe Budget Route at a Glance

This journey has two legs: a shared minivan from Hat Yai to Pak Bara Pier, then a speedboat to the island. Boats dock at Pattaya Beach, where most guesthouses and our resort are an easy walk away. Backpackers find this route works well because transport connections are synchronized, with departures running reliably during high season.

Step-by-Step: Your Journey to Sunrise Beach

Leg 1: Hat Yai to Pak Bara Pier

Minivans leave from Hat Yai’s central bus terminal or the Clock Tower area throughout the morning, with the busiest departures between 06:00 and 08:00. These are timed to connect with the first speedboats leaving Pak Bara. The ride takes 1.5–2.5 hours and costs THB 200–350 per person. Catching an early departure from Hat Yai maximizes your time on Koh Lipe. It gives you a better shot at the morning speedboat crossing and lets you arrive on Sunrise Beach by early afternoon, with plenty of daylight left to settle in.

Leg 2: Pak Bara Pier to Koh Lipe

At Pak Bara Pier, you’ll buy a speedboat ticket for the crossing. Boats leave daily between 09:00 and 15:00, and the ride takes 1.5–2 hours depending on conditions. Tickets usually run THB 500–700. During the crossing, you’ll pass through Tarutao National Marine Park, so keep your camera ready. November through April brings the steadiest conditions — the Andaman Sea is calmer then, making for a comfortable ride. If you’re traveling during shoulder season, book the earliest departure you can find to skip the afternoon chop.

Leg 3: Arrival on Koh Lipe

Boats arrive at Pattaya Beach, though depending on tides, you may need a longtail boat taxi to reach the shore — a short ride that usually costs around THB 50. From there, most guesthouses and our resort are within walking distance. The crossing takes four hours, which is long by Andaman standards, so we recommend bringing water and snacks for the journey.
